Norwich to Tilbury pylons — how should grid need and landscape protection be balanced?

The Norwich to Tilbury electricity-transmission proposal, promoted by National Grid, is intended to reinforce the network as more electricity generation connects in the east of England.

Norwich to Tilbury Project Overview

  • Proposal: A new high-voltage connection using overhead lines and some underground sections.
  • Route: From the Norwich area through East Anglia towards Tilbury.
  • Promoter’s case: Additional capacity to move electricity to where it is needed.
  • Main dispute: The route and technology, including how alternatives have been assessed.

Project Status & Local Controversy

In August 2026, Babergh and Mid Suffolk councils reiterated their objections after the examination. They questioned the treatment of alternatives and impacts on landscape, heritage, farming and communities. Their update anticipated a decision in February 2027; that is an expected timetable, not consent already granted.

Discussion point: What evidence would allow residents to compare overhead, underground and offshore options fairly, including their costs, environmental effects and delivery times?

Infrastructure Capacity & Delivery

  • Network need: Which constraints would this connection remove, and how does it fit with other planned network upgrades?
  • Comparing alternatives: Publish the assumptions behind route choices so the public can see why options were accepted or rejected.

Environmental and Landscape Risks

  • Landscape and heritage: Assess impacts on views and historic settings alongside the effects of underground construction.
  • Farming and habitats: How will soil, drainage and habitat recovery be checked after works, including on temporarily occupied land?

Access and Community Impacts

  • Construction access: Which villages and narrow roads would carry works traffic, and what restrictions would apply?
  • Accountability: What independent process should resolve disputes over damage, reinstatement and long-term maintenance access?
